Modafinil Stacks: Alpha GPC, Caffeine & What Actually Works

Supplements and capsules laid out to illustrate Modafinil nootropic stacking

The most useful Modafinil "stack" is also the simplest: add a choline source such as Alpha GPC to blunt the headache many users get, and, if you want a smoother energy floor, use a modest dose of caffeine paired with L-theanine. Beyond that, more is rarely better — piling on stimulants tends to add jitters and cardiovascular strain, not focus. This guide explains why the choline stack helps, how to run caffeine + L-theanine sensibly, and which combinations to avoid. Note that these supplements are not TGA-approved to enhance Modafinil, and evidence for most nootropic stacks is limited.

Why "Stacking" Modafinil Is Usually Overrated

Modafinil already does the heavy lifting for wakefulness and focus. Most people don't need anything alongside it, and the biggest gains come from good sleep, hydration and correct timing — see our optimisation guide. Stacking should solve a specific problem (like headaches) or provide a small, well-understood benefit (like smoother energy), not chase a bigger "high." If you're new to Modafinil, run it on its own for a few sessions first so you know your baseline.

Choline Sources: Fixing the Modafinil Headache

Headache is the most common Modafinil complaint. A widely reported (though not definitively proven) explanation is increased acetylcholine turnover in the brain during prolonged focus, which can outpace your available choline. Supplementing a choline source can top up that supply and, for many users, reduce or prevent the headache.

Alpha GPC vs other choline sources: Alpha GPC (alpha-glycerophosphocholine) is a highly bioavailable choline source that crosses the blood-brain barrier efficiently, which is why it's popular for the anti-headache role — a common dose in the nootropic community is around 300 mg. CDP-choline (citicoline) is a gentler alternative some prefer. Cheaper choline bitartrate is poorly converted and less effective for this purpose. Basic dietary steps help too: eggs and a proper meal before dosing.

Two honest caveats: a subset of people are choline-sensitive and get worse headaches or low mood from too much choline, so start low. And plain hydration and food resolve many Modafinil headaches on their own — try those first.

Caffeine + L-Theanine: The Reliable Add-On

If you want a smoother energy floor without piling on stimulation, a small dose of caffeine with L-theanine is the best-supported add-on. L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea, takes the edge off caffeine's jitteriness and is often used in a roughly 2:1 theanine-to-caffeine ratio (for example ~100 mg caffeine with ~200 mg L-theanine).

The key with Modafinil is restraint. Modafinil is already keeping you alert for 10–15 hours, so stacking large amounts of caffeine on top risks a racing heart, anxiety and — because both are long-acting relative to your evening — wrecked sleep. Keep caffeine modest, take it early, and avoid it in the second half of your day. Our Red Bull vs Modafinil breakdown shows why energy drinks are a poor substitute.

A Sensible Starter Stack

Alpha GPC (or citicoline)~300 mgReduce headache
Caffeine (optional)~100 mg, earlySmooth energy floor

Introduce one item at a time so you can tell what's actually working. Doses above are community norms, not medical prescriptions.

What to Avoid

  • High-dose caffeine or energy drinks — additive cardiovascular strain and anxiety with little extra focus.
  • Stacking with amphetamine-type stimulants (dexamphetamine, Vyvanse) — dangerous cardiovascular load; see our Modafinil vs Adderall comparison.
  • Alcohol — masks intoxication and can worsen next-day fatigue.
  • Stacking two eugeroics (e.g. Modafinil + Armodafinil together) — no added benefit, more side effects.
  • "Kitchen-sink" pre-workout powders on top of Modafinil — unpredictable stimulant totals.
  • Anything that disrupts sleep — the fastest way to lose all the cognitive benefit.
